India's reported cyber-crime count has crossed one lakh cases in a year for the first time. The growth is not evenly distributed: Telangana and Karnataka together account for close to half of the national total.

The number should be read carefully. Higher reporting can reflect stronger policing and greater public awareness as well as a genuine rise in crime. State comparisons therefore need reporting rates, case outcomes, and population context—not just a league table of raw cases.

The question behind the number

The useful public-policy test is whether capacity is keeping pace: specialist police units, forensic turnaround, victim support, and prosecution. A national total makes the headline; those systems determine whether citizens recover.
